The Mark of 40 years
Survivors and their families have been fighting for justice, accountability, and compensation. Despite the huge loss of life and long-term health problems, they have been ignored by Dow Chemical and the Indian government. The Bhopal disaster led to a long legal and activist struggle. U.S. Judge John Keenan dismissed the case, saying India should handle it, but activists argued that Union Carbide’s decisions in the U.S. played a major role in the disaster. They pointed out unfair differences between the safety standards and compensation given to people in rich countries compared to those in poorer ones. For 40 years, activists have fought for justice, pushing for corporations to take responsibility and for fairer treatment, despite many legal and political obstacles.
